Neuroscience is a field of convergence of different scientific disciplines that have the nervous system as object of study. The development of this research area has been very noticeable, especially in the last decade of the 20th century which was known as the Decade of the Brain? Although the increase in knowledge of the development and function of the nervous system has been exponential, it is considered that the most important scientific challenge of humanity for the 21st century remains the explanation of the functional mechanisms of the human brain and of higher cognitive processes, such as thought and consciousness. In Colombia, interest in neuroscience research has arisen basically from the work of some groups of professors of Faculties of Medicine. Among them stands out the Neurosciences Group of the University of Antioquia led by doctorees Francisco Lopera and David Pineda, which is internationally recognized for its studies of familial Alzheimer’s disease caused by the E280A mutation of the Presenilin-1 gene on chromosome 14. This group has developed research lines in Neurodegenerative Diseases and Attention Disorders and Hyperactivity in children, especially.
Research Lines:
- Behavior and behavior.
- Pain.
- Epilepsy.
- Cognitive neurosciences.
- Neuro-oftalmo-immunology.
- Basic neurosciences.
- Neurotoxicology.
Objectives:
- To deepen basic knowledge in neuroscience.
- Train students with the tools necessary to carry out good quality research.
- Strengthen pedagogical capacities such as public management and the development of strategies that allow better learning.
- Participate in research projects within the research lines of the NeURos Group.
- To participate in the meetings and in the annual competition of research seed beds in neuroscience.
