Abstract

This article proposes to analyse the transformations of the possible types of "discourse" on the Aborigines during the 1960s, starting from the interaction between the agents of the Foreign Affairs Department, whose duties included protecting the image of Australia, and the Ministry of Territories, which managed Aboriginal affairs at the federal level. Diplomats helped to import new attitudes towards the Aborigines in order to bring Australia into compliance with what they considered "foreign demands".
