Molecular characterization of pest insects in the Matarredonda moor.

Project: Research Project

Project Details

Description

Colombia has 10% of the planet's biodiversity and more than 50% of the world's paramos (1,2).

The Andean paramo is a strategic ecosystem that fulfills an important socio-ecological function due to the large number of eco-systemic services it offers, mainly water supply (3).

Despite its importance, this ecosystem is threatened throughout the national territory, due to factors such as the disappearance of native species, soil deterioration, livestock farming, agricultural activities, climate change and invasive pests (4).

Despite the great impact of invasive pests on the ecosystem, the study of pests that affect plant communities in the Colombian paramo is very limited and to date, there are no inventories or published molecular characterizations of these pests in Colombia.

The support offered by the Research and Innovation Directorate of the Universidad del Rosario with the competitive funds will be essential to support the first research project (to date) focused on molecularly characterizing the pests incident in the Cruz Verde moor, Matarredonda. In this order of ideas, the resources offered by the competitive funds will be essential to finance the field trips, the collection material and the sequencing of the collected specimens necessary for the development of the project.

In this way, from this project and with the financing offered by the competitive funds, a scientific base on recurring pests in moors of the department of Cundinamarca will be generated, a base that will be substantial for the construction of future conservation projects through plans. of management and control of wildlife and crop pests in Andean moors.
