Research Incubator: Sounds of conflict and peace

Organization profile

A large part of the world's countries are currently facing various youth problems, problems of violence, social participation, schooling, labor linkage and, in general, of meaning in life. Everyday, institutional and often academic discourses describe contemporary young people as unmotivated, hopeless, disconnected, unemployed, poor, violent and uneducated. It seems that in today's world the problems of youth cloud the expectations of their participation in the construction of societies. The future is not only uncertain, but also seems to be unreliable.
However, in today's world there are also experiences that show how young people are innovating and mobilizing social processes that have a significant impact on their contexts. Throughout history, it is possible to identify the relevant role that young people have played in different processes of social, technological and political change.

Objectives:

  • Promote research and socialization of studies that address the condition of youth in Colombia, their trajectories, representations and meanings about the body, and their training processes;
  • To provide a training space for the orientation of degree works and dissertations of students of the University;
  • Encourage the creation of research networks with other groups and centers of study on youth, institutions and allied entities;
  • To link students participating in the research projects carried out by the professors coordinating the research group

Profile of the seedbed:

The seedbed has a fundamentally practical focus. Its objectives are: i) to promote research and socialisation of studies that address the condition of young people in Colombia, their trajectories, representations and meanings about the body, and their training processes; ii) to provide a training space for the guidance of degree projects and dissertations by students of the University; iii) to promote the creation of research networks with other groups and study centres on youth, institutions and allied entities; iv) to involve students participating in the research projects carried out by the professors who coordinate the research group.

Work methodology:

The Semillero has an active line on youth violence (for the second semester of the year it is planned to reactivate one or two additional lines) led by Karen Cerón. Four lines of work are being developed (Prospero, Public Policies, Violence Prevention, Intervention Strategy in Suba and Egypt). We operate with monthly meetings and each working subgroup has its own meetings.

Pre-requisites for entry (optional)
The Semillero Estudios Sociales de la Juventud is open to all students of the university, regardless of semester or academic programme.

Active lines or projects:
- Line on Gangs in Bucaramanga and Suba.
- Line on youth, public policies and territories.
- Line on the formation of career aspiration by high school graduates.

Disciplines of the seedbed:
It is an alliance between our faculty and the School of Human Sciences, so students and graduates from our programmes, as well as Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work (as we convene members of the Youth Citizen Observatories of Bogotá) among others, participate.
