Resumen

Después de más de 50 años de conflicto armado, Colombia está en transición hacia un clima social y político más estable debido a una serie de acuerdos de paz entre el gobierno y diferentes grupos armados. Las consecuencias de estos cambios socioeconómicos y políticos en los ecosistemas son en gran medida inciertas, pero existe una preocupación creciente por el aumento derivado de la degradación ambiental. Aquí revisamos la capacidad de Colombia para monitorear el estado de sus ecosistemas y su tasa de cambio en el tiempo. Encontramos varios programas importantes actualmente establecidos por diferentes instituciones, así como por grupos independientes de científicos que se ocupan de diferentes aspectos del monitoreo ambiental. Sin embargo, la mayoría de las iniciativas actuales podrían mejorarse en términos de cobertura, calidad y acceso a los datos, y podrían articularse mejor entre sí. Proponemos un conjunto de actividades que aumentarían la capacidad de Colombia para monitorear sus ecosistemas, proporcionar información útil a los encargados de formular políticas y facilitar la investigación científica. Estos incluyen 1) el establecimiento de un centro nacional de síntesis ecológica que se centre en el análisis de la información existente; 2) el establecimiento de un sistema de observatorio ecológico que recoja nueva información, integre productos de teledetección y produzca productos casi en tiempo real sobre variables ecológicas clave; y 3) la creación de nuevas plataformas para el diálogo y la acción dentro de los grupos científicos y de políticas existentes.
