Resumen
This article intends to show how the concepts of emancipation and legal
pluralism relate to each other. These concepts play a central role in the
political agenda projected by some Latin American legal scholars. There is a
certain hope that the proper comprehension of the different manifestations of
legal pluralism may perhaps provide some of the elements needed for the
emancipation of the oppressed people. But, since the concept of legal
pluralism may relate to many different situations, it is still not clear that every
manifestation of legal pluralism can show the way to emancipation. In this
opportunity, the processes of informal urbanization in Latin America are the
subject of examination. The normative orders which are developed in these
urban areas for the regulation of property seem to be an adequate field of
study in order to understand how the manifestations of legal pluralism can be
fruitful for the political agenda of the Latin American critical legal studies.
