Attack the statues. Vandalism and social protest in Latin America

Between 2019 and 2020, attacks on commemorative monuments took place in different parts of the world amid protests against police violence, the capitalist system, racism, colonialism, and the genocide of different human groups. Starting from this broad context, this essay reflects on the relationship between vandalism and social protest in Latin America through the analysis of three case studies in Mexico, Chile and Colombia. In the same way, it seeks to establish the scope and limitations of this type of action, as well as to propose some alternatives from public history and contemporary art.
