To determine whether periods of strong environmental variability coincided with speciation in the genus Coffea and likely led to the evolution of the species from which coffee is derived. The genus Coffea L. currently comprises 124 species (Davis et al., 2011) from tropical Africa, Madagascar, the Comoros, Mascarenes (Mauritius and Reunion), tropical Asia and Australasia. Coffea species are mostly restricted to humid evergreen forest, although some species are found in seasonally dry deciduous forest and/or bushland. The majority of species are found in East Africa and Madagascar from x to y and of those many have highly restricted distributions.
