Abstract

Actors in the triple helix model have found innovation spaces to be a fruitful environment for accelerating innovation. However, innovation spaces come in a variety of forms, including Makerspaces, Hackerspaces, FabLabs, innovation labs, Innovation Centers, ideaLabs, Social Innovation Labs, and STEAM Labs. Hence, we seek to address the question, what do these innovation spaces have in common? We analyse the primary content of 181 innovation spaces' websites using web scraping, semantic discovery, and topic modelling. These innovation spaces' websites include helpful details about their offerings, communication channels, resources, and objectives that can be used to understand their structure and composition. Thirteen different themes emerge from the information on the innovation spaces' website, which, based on their similarity, can be classified into three macro-themes: (1) the educational emphasis of the spaces, (2) the digital manufacturing resources they harness and offer, and (3) their strong community-building.
