Abstract

In the philosophy of Nicolás Gómez Dávila can be found one of the most radical criticisms of modernity formulated in the 20th century. What does this criticism consist of? For the philosopher from Bogota, modernity is fundamentally an anthropological project. It is not only that the modern age has a certain "discourse" about man. Nor is "modernity" simply a category to delimit a period in the history of man; a period within which, among other things, a particular way of understanding ourselves as human beings would arise, and which would be explained by virtue of certain historical circumstances that would have given rise to it. Rather, in Gómez Dávila's philosophy, modernity must be understood as a way of being. Such a way of being implies, in turn and necessarily, an understanding of the experience that corresponds to it.
