Abstract

Purpose/Context: the analysis of scientific integrity (CI) in higher education, from the perspective of virtue ethics, highlights the importance of an approach from the current research culture and raises the need for a comprehensive system that transcends the traditional norms, with the argument of how virtue ethics provides a deeper and more human understanding of CI.

Methodology/Approach: the article is part of the project “Generation of Recommendations in Scientific Integrity” (Greici), with a theoretical-reflexive approach, with a review of various ethical theories such as utilitarianism, virtue ethics and ethical codes and historical deontological. In addition, examples of CI in higher education and its evolution in the scientific context are explored.

Results/Findings: The analysis reveals that, although CI has usually focused on normative and deontological aspects, virtue ethics must be incorporated to understand and promote responsible and ethical research conduct in higher education.

Discussion/Conclusions/Contributions: It is concluded that virtue ethics offers a broader vision to understand and promote IC in higher education. The application of the quadruple helix model and a mentoring system is proposed for a more humane and comprehensive implementation of CI, which covers normative, motivational and epistemological aspects. This with a contribution of paradigmatic change towards a holistic understanding of human-centered CI, with the promotion of a culture of ethical and responsible research.
