Abstract

Taking the ideas of Edward Gibson, the territorial democratization in Colombia has been analysed by different authors saying that the little penetration that the democratic logics have had in some of the areas of the country, the existence of powerful regional elites and the presence of illegal armed agents have created the right conditions to classify some of the territories as sub-national authoritarianism. The article herein analyses the case of Riosucio in Chocó (province of Colombia); it will determine whether or not the features and dynamics of the local politics will allow considering this case as a typical example of sub-national authoritarianism.

Key words: Democracy; democratization; municipal government; electoral system; sub-national authoritarianism
