Abstract
In September 2016, after several years of negotiations, the Government of Juan Manuel Santos and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC-ep) signed peace agreements. The popular endorsement of the agreements via plebiscite, scheduled for a few weeks later, was foreseen as the first step in the implementation schedule. Colombia and the world were surprised when on October 2 the no (rejection) vote outnumbered the yes (support) vote by a narrow margin of less than one percentage point, leaving the peace accords hanging in the balance. The victory of the No in the plebiscite was a turning point: how to understand this electoral result, what have been its political implications?
