Abstract

Ocular toxoplasmosis is the most common etiology of posterior uveitis in the world and is an important cause of visual impairment and blindness. Last years have witnessed the advances in understanding the basis for the retinal damage, the genetic basis of susceptibility, the particularities of immune response, how the treatment scheme have to change depending on the geographic origin of the infecting strain, and the differences in severity due to infection by virulent strains. This chapter summarizes our current understanding of the biological and immunological basis of the disease, the diagnostic algorithm to reach confirmation of the Toxoplasma origin of the ocular manifestations or if there are coinfections, the therapeutic alternatives, and the prophylactic regimes to prevent recurrences.
