Abstract

Taking into account the relationship between religion and politics in Brazil and the spread of uninformative content during its presidential elections, this investigation analyzes the relationship between religious discourse and disinformation in content contained in ten family WhatsApp groups during the 2018 presidential campaign. After carrying out a content analysis of videos, audios and still images shared on this social network, the results show that most of them included two types of misinformation: false context and manufactured content. The religious discourse is majorly based on the use of parts of the Bible to decontextualize the elector and the objective of the majority of the messages is to support Bolsonaro or to undermine Haddad’s image. These elements were part of a campaign strategy on social networks to manipulate the cognitive biases of Brazilian electors and influence the democratic process.
