Abstract
In recent years, various studies have proven that social media can motivate citizens to participate in public life. In the case of Mexico, the consolidation of this process could be seen in the 2018 presidential elections. While it is clear that
digital media have had an effect on Mexican political life, their real contribution to
strengthening democracy is a controversial issue. One year after the historic electoral process, a qualitative study was conducted in which 35 specialists from the social sciences of public and private universities in six states of the country were
interviewed. The general conclusions are that academics interviewed consider that there are both advances and risks in a process of change that continues today.
