Abstract
The requirements for working with the disabled population have resulted in the generation of strategies such as Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR), which in its philosophy proposes “Promoting the development and quality of life of persons with disabilities”. Occupational Therapy shares these principles and uses occupation as a resource. This article presents a theoretical proposal for understanding CBR from the viewpoint of Occupational Therapy, the human being, the human condition and the life cycle. It also outlines some of the guidelines of the local policies in Bogota, Colombia, in matters of work based on CBR and the orientation and training needs of Occupational Therapists in these principles. Finally, this paper presents the need that arouses in the occupational therapy field, of articulating the guidelines of CBR, with the profession’s principles and the training of occupational therapists so that social change processes can be generated.
