Abstract

Was fascism a specifically European movement of the interwar period or did similar movements occur in other continents and not only before World War II? Gabriela de Lima Grecco and Leandro Pereira Gonçalves have coordinated "Ibero-American Fascisms" in which they show that the phenomenon also reached Ibero-America. Influenced by the Italian and German European models, also Spanish and Portuguese in the case of Brazil; although it had its particular adaptations to the circumstances of each country and at each moment, as all the European fascist movements were also peculiar if compared with the Italian original. Some adopted more external forms than ideology, as in the case of Perón in Argentina and Getulio Vargas in Brazil; others were properly fascist and even became mass movements, such as the Brazilian Integralismo or the Mexican golden shirts. Gabriela de Lima Grecco and Leandro Pereira Gonçalves have relied on the collaboration of leading experts on fascism in each Ibero-American country, who have tried to elucidate the specific characteristics of each political group, focusing on the organization of such movements, their ideas and leaders.
