It fulfills the following functions: 1) support of the trunk and head due to the presence of the spine; 2) transfer of loads from the upper segment to the pelvis; 3) movement of the trunk and 4) protection of the spinal cord and the origin of the spinal nerves. At the clinical level, its alterations are one of the most frequent reasons for consultation.
