Abstract

Glioblastoma is a very aggressive type of cancer, located in the central nervous system, which originates from glial cells. Currently, the treatment of a patient diagnosed with glioblastoma includes radiotherapy. However, this therapy has two factors that limit its effectiveness: the resistance of the tumor and the side effects of the therapy on the healthy tissues surrounding the treated area. For this reason, in recent years the use of nanomaterials has been proposed as radiosensitizing agents, given their surface area:volume ratio and the possibility of including elements of high atomic number in their structure, which facilitates the accumulation of a higher dose of X-rays in the tumor. Thus, and considering the importance of seeking alternatives in treatments against glioblastoma, this project seeks to study the potential of a nanoplatform based on carbon dots doped with lanthanide ions (PC:Yb3+,Gd3+) as a radiosensitizing agent in radiotherapy by means of in vitro tests.
