Abstract
Background: Nutritional counseling in the promotion of healthy aging and prevention of geriatric syndromes, in a context of comprehensive care in a prevention model have been related to an impact on quality of life in elderly patients. The objective of this review was to compile scientific evidence on the factors to be taken into account in nutritional counseling in the elderly to promote healthy eating habits, according to the Preferred Reporting Items in Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses PRISMA Statement. Methods: The search was carried out in the databases PubMed, ScienceDirect and Embase. Results: hirty articles were included. Nutrition counseling in the older adult addresses recommendations on healthy eating and hydration, including nutrition and muscle health, nutrition in mental health, and nutrition to prevent weight loss and malnutrition. Additionally, it recommends nutritional counseling for older adults and their caregivers on dietary modifications for high food intake to prevent overweight, dietary modifications for loss of appetite (anorexia of aging) and dietary recommendations for the treatment of dysphagia. Conclusions: n conclusion, nutritional counseling for the promotion of healthy aging and prevention of geriatric syndromes in the elderly should be understood as a public health intervention that contributes to the development of comprehensive programs to support active and healthy aging.
