Abstract
Objective: Explore the sociodemographic characteristics related to exceptional longevity in the Colombian oldest-old population.Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study using the National Population Housing Census from 2018. We described and analyzed the so-ciodemographic characteristics that best explain exceptional longevity in the Colombian centenarian population. Results: Colombia had 12,226 cen-tenarians by 2018 and 5,848.754 older adults (60-99 years), for every cente-narian man there were 1.38 centenarian women. The departments with the highest rates of centenarians were Bolivar, Guaviare, and Chocó. The socio-demographic characteristics were similar in both groups, with the exception of marital status, education, and work-related activities. Conclusions: Glob-al and Colombian aging underscore the need for strategies to enhance the quality of life for older adults. Similarities between Colombian centenarians and those worldwide suggest the importance of prospective research to im-pact public policy and the world health organization guidelines.
