Abstract

The paper explores the impact of an arborisation process on the number of robberies in Bogotá. Using a quarterly database, it is found that there is a statistically significant and negative relationship between the process of arborisation and the number of robberies in Bogotá. Using spatial models, we explore spatial contagion effects in the process of arborisation. It is found that both increases in the planting rate of a given block and neighbouring blocks decrease robbery rates. The results suggest that a tree planting policy would have a greater impact if it is implemented by increasing tree cover in all blocks of Bogotá and not only in selected blocks.
