Abstract

Avoidance/restrictive eating disorders have been widely described because of their similar characteristics and the consequences they have on the development and growth of the children who experience them. Picky eating is a multifactorial disorder, where children show negative behaviors towards food or have a preference for one food group. This narrative literature review aims to present the latest research related to picky eating, providing guidance on signs and symptoms, assessment and intervention in children with picky eating by the multiprofessional team.

The literature review was conducted in PubMed and Scopus databases, applying as main inclusion criteria articles in English, Spanish and Portuguese, on picky feeding in children between birth and 5 years old. The results of this review point out that picky eating would be determined by three important stages in the child's life; gestation, early feeding phase and experiences during the second year of life, therefore, it is required to recognize the warning signs (refusal to eat certain foods, lack of feeding skills, excessive duration during feeding times, etc.), this allows for an early evaluation to guide therapeutic intervention, thus promoting safe and effective feeding for the nutrition and quality of life of the child.
