Abstract

The objective of this work is to characterize the state of clinical engineering from the scientific publications. First, the most significant factors influencing the change and evolution of health systems are briefly described. The concept of clinical engineering, its fundamental functions and its evolution within the development of healthcare systems are then defined. Finally, the state of the specialty is presented, taking a look from the scientific publications.
There is an apparent lack of interest in the engineering community to publish scientific research papers. This can be seen from the clear downward trend in the number of citations and the number of publications (in volume or quantity) in the main journals of the scientific guild.
Finally, in the author's opinion, the current challenges and future developments that the specialty has to face in order to position itself in the world of publications are presented.
