Who cares for those who care for us?: Mental health as a human right for informal caregivers in Bogotá.

El proyecto tiene como objetivo investigar la prevalencia de síntomas depresivos y el acceso al derecho a la salud mental en cuidadoras informales de adultos mayores con demencia en Bogotá de cuidadoras informales de sujetos con demencia en Bogotá), principalmente Alzheimer, aunque no exclusivamente. Se entiende por cuidadoras informales a aquellas personas, en su mayoría mujeres, que brindan apoyo físico y emocional a pacientes dependientes para actividades básicas de la vida diaria sin remuneración alguna. Este rol, históricamente feminizado, requiere un enfoque desde los derechos humanos para reconocer y proteger a quienes lo desempeñan.

La investigación adopta un enfoque sociojurídico y utiliza un método empírico mixto, combinando herramientas cuantitativas (encuestas con escalas estandarizadas) y cualitativas (entrevistas en profundidad). Mediante un estudio observacional descriptivo de corte transversal, se evaluará y estratificará la prevalencia de síntomas depresivos en estas cuidadoras. El tamizaje permitirá identificar a quienes presentan riesgo elevado de trastornos depresivos y facilitar su referencia oportuna a servicios de salud mental. Las entrevistas complementarán la información cuantitativa, profundizando en la experiencia y situación real de las cuidadoras respecto al derecho a la salud mental, visibilizando posibles vulneraciones.

Este análisis aportará datos fundamentales sobre la salud mental de un grupo clave para el sistema de cuidado en construcción en Colombia. Además, incluirá un estudio de los tratados internacionales de derechos humanos ratificados por Colombia, la jurisprudencia de la Corte Constitucional y las normativas nacionales relacionadas, con el fin de evidenciar si se están vulnerando los derechos de las cuidadoras en Bogotá.

El informe final contribuirá a fortalecer el sistema de cuidado mediante recomendaciones dirigidas a tomadores de decisiones y organismos como la Defensoría del Pueblo, Procuraduría, Comisarías de Familia y el Ministerio de Salud. También brindará evidencia para el diseño de estrategias integrales de apoyo y promoción de la salud mental, favoreciendo un modelo de cuidado más equitativo, sostenible y centrado en el bienestar y los derechos de las mujeres cuidadoras, basado en información de primera mano.

The project aims to investigate the prevalence of depressive symptoms and access to mental health care among informal caregivers of older adults with dementia in Bogotá, mainly Alzheimer's disease, although not exclusively. Informal caregivers are defined as those individuals, mostly women, who provide physical and emotional support to dependent patients for basic activities of daily living without any remuneration. This role, historically feminized, requires a human rights approach to recognize and protect those who perform it.

The research adopts a socio-legal approach and uses a mixed empirical method, combining quantitative tools (surveys with standardized scales) and qualitative tools (in-depth interviews). Through a descriptive cross-sectional observational study, the prevalence of depressive symptoms in these caregivers will be assessed and stratified. Screening will identify those at high risk of depressive disorders and facilitate their timely referral to mental health services. The interviews will complement the quantitative information, delving deeper into the caregivers' experience and real situation with regard to the right to mental health, highlighting possible violations.

This analysis will provide fundamental data on the mental health of a key group for the care system under construction in Colombia. It will also include a study of the international human rights treaties ratified by Colombia, the jurisprudence of the Constitutional Court, and related national regulations, in order to determine whether the rights of caregivers in Bogotá are being violated.

The final report will contribute to strengthening the care system through recommendations aimed at decision-makers and agencies such as the Ombudsman's Office, the Attorney General's Office, Family Commissions, and the Ministry of Health. It will also provide evidence for the design of comprehensive strategies to support and promote mental health, favoring a more equitable and sustainable care model focused on the well-being and rights of women caregivers, based on first-hand information.
