The aim is to offer a rational reconstruction (tied to the categories formulated by Imre Lakatos for this purpose) that accounts for: (i) the way in which the use of this conceptual instrument became attractive (for this purpose it is necessary to highlight its explanatory power); (ii) the substantial reforms of which it was the object until the 17th century and
