SMART BIODIGESTERS FOR A BETTER ENVIRONMENT IN RURAL AREAS - Colombia -

Project: Innovation Project

Project Details

Description

A big challenge faced by rural communities of La Vega is effective waste management. This challenge arises from the distance of rural areas to urban centers and the poor quality of the existing road infrastructure, which hinders the possibility of providing a reliable waste collection system. A substantial portion of waste remains untreated or underutilized in the fields, leading to adverse environmental and health effects Simultaneously, rural households and producers, such as coffee growers, rely on propane for various processes, including cooking and drying. The distribution of propane is sometimes delayed, due to the poor condition of the road. Yet, current residues could be harnessed to produce biogas and soil amendments through anaerobic digestion - AD. A carefully monitored AD process emerges as a promising solution to address waste management challenges while simultaneously providing a sustainable source of soil conditioners and clean energy for households and rural producers.
