Social Epidemiology and Aging Seminar

Social Epidemiology and Aging marks two current issues in contemporary life arising from the epidemiological and demographic transition, as well as from the dynamics of the global and regional economy, which significantly affect the world's population changes in the 21st century, with a population exceeding 7 billion, with a growing trend towards population aging, a global economy marked by inequity that varies from region to region and a contrast between the availability of technologies and means to prolong life, treat disease and enable greater well-being, with limited access for a large proportion of the population, especially in developing countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia.

For the Public Health of our country it is of great relevance to advance epidemiological and social studies that allow a better understanding of the dimension of several interrelated problems: The tendency to population aging generated by technological advances in medicine and health sciences, the consequent increase in chronic and neurodegenerative diseases, an increase in the number of people with functional limitations that affect even the basic activities of daily life, an economic dynamic in a context of a changing and competitive world that generates a growing inequality gap that affects the social security systems, which increasingly require greater resources to cover more people, with a paradoxical reduction in the income of funds to the system that support the demand generated by users.

With the invitation of Dr. Mauricio Avendaño, Psychologist with a PhD in Public Health and Epidemiology from Erasmus University and Masters in Public Health and Epidemiology, Professor of the Department of Social Sciences, Health and Medicine at King's College London and the Harvard School of Public Health, with a long history of research on aging, the impact of macroeconomic shocks and social public policies on older people, will undoubtedly bring to the academic community of the University, especially at the level of postgraduate courses in Epidemiology and Public Health, teachers and researchers.

Our purpose is to carry out a strengthening activity on Social Epidemiology and Aging, a fundamental topic for Epidemiology that can include students, professors and researchers of Postgraduate Specialization and Master in Epidemiology, Public Health, Safety and Health at Work and interested researchers.

Similarly, it seeks to expand and strengthen the Public Health Group, with a research network in Social Epidemiology more robust and with international projection, with development of collaborative studies with King's College London and with the participation of the University CES, which will allow an academic exchange between three schools and a field of action extended to Medellin and Antioquia.

1. Dos conferencias a comunidad académica Universidad, EMCS sobre Epidemiología Social y Envejecimiento desarrolladas.
2. Seminario específico de una semana dirigido a estudiantes y docentes de los postgrados en Epidemiología, Salud Pública, Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo.
3. Línea de Investigación en Epidemiología Social y Envejecimiento en el Grupo de Investigación en Salud Pública consolidada y en productivo.
4. Planeación de un proyecto nacional de investigación para ser desarrollado con la participación de las tres universidades.
