RECONSTRUCTION OF THE PHYLOGENETIC RELATIONSHIPS OF THE BUTTERFLY SPECIES OF THE HAETERINI TRIBE (NYMPHALIDAE: SATYRINAE)

Project: Research Project

Project Details

Description

The taxonomic delimitation of butterflies of the Haeterini tribe has been based solely on diagnostic morphological and geographic characters that have provided valuable information to classify populations into different species and subspecies.

However, the systematics of the Haeterini have not been studied in detail and their taxonomy has not yet fully adopted molecular species delimitation using multilocus threshold-based approaches.

The goal here is to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships of Haeterini through the use of genetic/morphological data to produce as complete a molecular phylogeny as possible for the tribe and to delimit its species using methods based on single gene thresholds (ABGD and bPTP ) and multilocus (GMYC), which provides a solid basis for the recognition of its species through an integrative taxonomy.

With the data obtained in this project it is intended to contribute to clarifying the taxonomy and with the phylogenetic hypothesis obtained, to propose scenarios for the evolution of the group.

Commitments / Obligations

Obtain the morphological and molecular data necessary to delimit the species of the tribe.

There will be a report with the results of these analyzes and it is possible in the future to generate an undergraduate thesis tied to this young talent or another student.

In any case, the young talent will acquire useful tools for their training. If possible, you can present a poster at an event.
