Project Details

Description

In Colombia, the number of women between the ages of 10 and 14 who have children is 6,292 per year (1). The total fertility rate is highest in departments with high poverty indicators, and according to the National Policy on Sexuality, Sexual Rights and Reproductive Rights (2010), there is a direct relationship between the increase in the fertility rate and the low level of social development indicators (2). The specific child fertility rate (10-14 years) for the year 2020 was 2.2 girl mothers for every thousand girls in that age range, which is lower than in 2015 (3). Similarly, at the departmental level, it is observed that in almost all departments the child fertility rate decreased between 2015 and 2020, with the exception of two departments, on the one hand, Chocó, which in both years presented a rate of 3.7, and on the other hand, Nariño, which in 2020 presented a rate of 2.8, with a difference of 0.1 from that observed in 2015 (4).
In the case of Tumaco, the fertility rate in women aged 10-14 between 2015 and 2019 ranged between 5.36 and 4.09 per 100,000 women in this age range, while the fertility rate in women aged 15-19 was between 88.81 and 67.19 in 2015 and 2019 respectively (5).

The large amount of information generated in the different fields of knowledge and the attraction to the use of new technologies by the new generations mean that the traditional teaching methods and educational processes of today do not manage to meet the expectations of the different young people and communities in general.

In this sense, it is intended to implement a digital tool with a cultural approach, co-created together with young people and health officials to promote sexual and reproductive health in the Municipality of Tumaco, Nariño, in which the different actors (young people/adolescents) will find ‘learning modules’ associated with educational topics, integrating dynamic activities designed to recognise and strengthen the care practices of the selected municipalities. This application will allow the integration of leaders and social organisations of the community of the Municipality of Tumaco, Nariño, taking into account that the current health system is migrating from a biomedical health system to one with an intercultural PHC approach, which requires interdisciplinary and intersectoral work, which is considered to be fundamental pillars for the development of actions that favour the improvement of the quality of life and therefore the health and well-being of the communities.

Thus, the aim is to generate routes for self-care and access to available sexual health services with young people and allied institutions in the municipality of Tumaco, Nariño, in order to reduce problems in this socio-cultural aspect, such as teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, gender violence, and the recognition of sexuality as an integral part of the human being that can be lived in a healthy way. It also aims to provide guidelines in the generation of a life project that allows people to draw up a life plan to achieve personal and family development objectives. Likewise, it allows an orientation to have a sense in thinking and acting consistently from the opportunities and resources available to each individual under their social environment.
The National University of Colombia, as a public and national educational institution, offers quality undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. It also contributes to the development and redefinition of the national project, studies and enriches the cultural, natural and environmental heritage of the country. The Tumaco campus is one of the most recent to receive students in compliance with the educational goals proposed for the Pacific region, specifically with the Faculty of Nursing. The Universidad del Rosario, with the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the Directorate of Outreach and Graduates and the Directorate of Research and Innovation, in accordance with its strategic premise of ‘Creating and strengthening strategic alliances with actors of regional impact that favour the integration, sustainability, transfer of capacities and transformation of the regions and the University’ embodied in the Ruta 2025, has already had experience of collaboration in Tumaco. In 2019, the Country Route Project, which seeks to generate scenarios for dialogue on the main issues of regional interest, came to Tumaco to discuss the local agenda and look at options for collaboration in outreach, research and teaching.
A space for dialogue that gave rise to the project ‘Rural entrepreneurship with women's leadership in the Municipality of Tumaco (Nariño) and its rural area: analysis of opportunities and challenges from a citizen science perspective’, which is a research initiative that contributes to the construction of social fabric by understanding the dynamics of women's entrepreneurship in Tumaco and its rural area.
In order to continue advancing in the mission functions of the participating universities in training, research and extension, this project seeks to articulate these aims for the co-construction of a proposal that includes three approaches: 1. Public health with a focus on primary health care, addressing sexual and reproductive health; 2. Cultural approach based on knowledge, attitudes and practices related to the topic of interest and 3.
This will be an applied research with a qualitative approach that aims to contribute with strategies for the reduction of problems in this field, such as teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, gender violence, it is expected to develop a collaborative and innovative work, integrating information technology with the needs of access and promotion of sexual and reproductive rights for adolescents in rural and urban contexts.
