Project Details

Description

Introduction: Stroke is currently one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. Its incidence and that of its sequelae are on the rise, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. For this reason, the development of any biomarker capable of predicting which patients may experience adverse outcomes, such as mortality, warrants further study. One such biomarker is the measurement of cranial muscle mass on computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans.
Objective: To determine the predictive capabilities of muscle volume measurement regarding in-hospital mortality in patients over 60 years of age with ischemic stroke.
Methodology: A retrospective cohort study to develop a predictive model. For the study, a sample size of 335 is estimated for model development and an additional 143 cases for validation if the model proves significant.
Expected results: We expect to develop and validate a predictive model for in-hospital mortality in patients with ischemic stroke using temporal muscle volume as the variable of interest.
