Nursing Theory and Practice: Options for Bridging the Gap

This project addresses one of the issues identified in the professional practice of nursing in a hospital setting, where there is a disconnect between theoretical and methodological foundations and clinical practice. This research stems from a multicenter project completed in January 2013—currently in the process of publication—entitled “Humanized Care in Nursing Services,” in which one of the findings highlights the disconnect between theory and practice. The knowledge generated throughout the history of nursing as a profession has addressed the need to establish the foundations of care—the very essence of nursing—through the description, explanation, and prediction of phenomena specific to the discipline; in this way, an entire theoretical framework has been developed, supported by the scientific method and by advancements in other sciences such as biology, the behavioral sciences, and the social and human sciences.
