Ophthalmological manifestations in children with Down syndrome in Bogotá Colombia

Project: Research Project

Project Details

Description

Down Syndrome is characterized by cognitive dysfunction, memory and language failures, which can vary in degree of involvement, from mild to profound. The ophthalmological characteristics in this population include alterations in visual refraction, specific morphological characteristics in the eyelids, epicanthus, symmetry, lacrimal canal function, among others. The opportune diagnosis of ocular alterations in this population helps to prevent difficulties in development and learning.
In our environment there is no study in this population that allows us to establish what the characteristics are from the ophthalmological point of view. The present study aims to determine the type and frequency of ophthalmological manifestations presented by this population based on the assessment of subjects who attend a specialized institution and which is a reference center for this type of condition. It is expected that the results of this research will allow us to define the characteristics of our population and establish monitoring and control programs.
