Design and qualitative evaluation of the implementation of a curriculum for the development of clinical reasoning based on virtual patients “e-Clinic”

This project aims to describe the conceptualization, design and implementation of the “e-Clinic” curriculum and carry out an initial evaluation from the perception of the different actors involved in it (students, teachers) through the application of the VPIRS scale, which will be validated. in Spanish
as an integral part of the project.

GOALS:

General:

Describe the conceptualization, design and implementation of a curriculum supported by virtual patients “e-clinic” for the development of skills for taking clinical history and clinical reasoning in the medicine program of the Universidad del Rosario and evaluate the perception of students
and teachers about their development.

Specifics:

- Present the theoretical framework that supports the implementation of the “e-Clinic” curriculum

- Describe the design and implementation of the e-clinic curriculum in light of the institutional educational project and the curricular guidelines of the medicine program of the Universidad del Rosario.

- Translate and validate the Virtual Patient Integration Rating Scale-VPIRS (EPIPVIC - Virtual Patient Integration into the Curriculum Perception Scale).

- Qualitatively evaluate the implementation of the “e-Clinic” curriculum from the perception of students and teachers.

- Registro sistemático y riguroso del diseño e implementación de un currículo apoyado en pacientes virtuales para el desarrollo de habilidades para la realización de la historia clínica y del razonamiento clínico dentro del programa de pregrado de medicina de la Universidad del Rosario.

- Presentación de la experiencia y de los resultados de la evaluación cualitativa inicial de la implementación del currículo “e-Clinic” en comités académicos institucionales con el propósito de proponer y justificar ajustes pertinentes.

- Presentación de un manuscrito para publicación de la experiencia mediante un artículo revisado por pares.

- Participación en eventos académicos: Presentación de los resultados del estudio en un congreso de educación.

- Escala validada al español para medir la percepción de los estudiantes respecto a la implementación de la estrategia de pacientes virtuales para el desarrollo de habilidades para la realización de historias clínicas y del razonamiento clínico.

Además, se obtendrán los siguientes resultados:

- Fortalecimiento de los procesos de diseño instruccional apoyado en recursos tecnológicos de simulación al interior de la Escuela de Medicina y Ciencias de la Salud de la Universidad del Rosario.

- Informe final de la investigación entregado al comité de ética en la investigación (CEI) de la Universidad del Rosario.
