Project Details
Description
The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency and characterize genetic variants of the G6PD gene in a university population from Bogotá, Colombia. Enzymatic screening for G6PD activity will be performed, followed by molecular characterization of G6PD variants using molecular biology and DNA sequencing techniques to establish the prevalence of the deficiency and the distribution of disease-associated alleles within the study population. In addition, the association between identified genotypes, residual enzyme activity, and participants' demographic characteristics will be evaluated. The findings will improve the understanding of the genetic epidemiology of G6PD deficiency in Colombia and provide evidence to support population screening, pharmacogenomic strategies, and the prevention of hemolytic episodes triggered by drugs, infections, or oxidative agents.
