The genetic diversity of pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa and helminths represent a relevant item in the understanding of the diseases caused by these microorganisms. However, at present for some eukaryotic pathogens there are no molecular markers to understand the diversity, genetic structure and thus the biology of diploid eukaryotic pathogens such as protozoan intestinal parasites and helminths. In this order of ideas it is imperative the search of molecular markers that allow to evaluate this diversity and to provide information of the genetic structure of these pathogens in the country and in the same way to be able to compare them with those of other countries. Finally to date, neither the country nor the world has a database of alleles for diploid eukaryotic pathogens such as those developed for bacteria. For that reason it is necessary to fill this gap in the knowledge of basic sciences and build a web portal that can provide this service to the country and the entire world. It is for this reason that this research proposal is coupled to the call for Basic Sciences of Colciencias which seeks to contribute to the advancement of research in basic biological sciences, physics, chemistry, biomedicine and mathematics, which moves the frontier of knowledge and contributes to the generation of new knowledge products of high impact. This proposal wishes to fulfill the general objective of this call in which as a mechanism of innovation is the generation of new tools for understanding the biology of intestinal parasites in the country as well as strengthen the research capacity of the groups of the Universidad del Rosario and Universidad Nacional de Colombia which together have been working on understanding the genetic structure and population of intestinal parasites in the country with verifiable products. Finally, this proposal seeks the formation of graduate students to complement the specific objectives of this call.
