Project Details

Description

In-hospital falls are one of the most frequent Adverse Events (AE) that constitute 84% of these, being an indicator of quality of care according to the Joint Commission (JC), in addition to being part of the instructional packages of the Ministry of Health. Most falls occur in adults over 65 years of age and are generally caused by balance problems, which results in inadequate conditions to provide an appropriate hospital service. In addition, it generates an additional cost for the institution due to prolonged stays, other treatments, conciliations, lawsuits and generates an impact on the patient, family and/or caregiver. In-hospital falls are among the most frequent Adverse Events (AE) that constitute 84% of these, being an indicator of care quality according to the Joint Commission (JC), this event is the second most frequent cause of mortality due to accidental and unintentional injuries worldwide (WHO), in addition, there is an instructional package of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Colombia as a guideline for implementation in health institutions that consists of the prevention of in-hospital falls. The objective of this study is to characterize the patients of a high complexity hospital in Colombia who presented in-hospital falls as an adverse event, in order to identify the intrinsic and extrinsic factors associated with the patient. It will be carried out by means of a cross-sectional quantitative descriptive design, which will include the reports of adverse events related to falls in the institution, from 2013 to 2016, with the intention of describing a series of variables where the unit of analysis will be the individual (1).
