Characterization of patients with posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) in two institutions in Bogotá, Colombia, between 2017 and 2023

Project: Research Project

Project Details

Description

Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome (PRES), is a clinical-radiological syndrome with various causal or precipitating factors. The clinical presentation is characterized by headache, altered consciousness, visual disturbances, and seizures. Radiological findings consist of predominantly posterior and subcortical cerebral vasogenic edema. The most frequently associated risk factors, precipitating factors, or causes include hypertensive crises, immunosuppressive/immunomodulatory drugs, and renal disease. While it can occur across all age groups, its epidemiology is not clearly characterized. Case series report incidences among patients in intensive care units ranging from 2.7% to 25%, with a higher frequency in women.

The syndrome's involved pathophysiological mechanisms encompass altered cerebral autoregulation, cerebral hyperperfusion with hypertension, cerebral ischemia, and endothelial dysfunction. This retrospective and descriptive study, conducted in hospitalized adult patients diagnosed with PRES between 2017 and 2023 in the Cardio department, aims to characterize its demographics, risk/precipitating factors, clinical aspects, paraclinical findings, and hospital outcomes.

We believe that the PRES patients assessed in the institution share similar characteristics to those described in the literature, except for a higher frequency among women and its association with hypertensive vascular disease during pregnancy. Additionally, the study aims to expand the case series of PRES patients and enhance understanding of their clinical and radiological characteristics.
