Habitat change in post-conflict: National System of Protected Areas and its effects on hydrological resources

Project: Research Project

Project Details

Description

Identify the location, magnitude and drivers of habitat loss change internally and around the Protected Areas System of Colombia, and evaluate the effects of land use changes on hydrological resources in the páramo ecosystem.

Keywords

1.Products of new scientific or technological knowledge expected

1) At least 3 publications in indexed international journals related to specific objectives 1, 2, 3.
2) At least 3 presentations at international conferences related to specific objectives 1, 2, 3.
3) At least 2 presentations at the Universidad del Rosario and Stockholm University related to specific objectives 1, 2, 3 open to the general public (professors, students, academic community, citizens).
4) Creation of a database in GIS format accessible to the public for free related to deforestation and soil change statistics (extension, typology of change) for the protected areas system of Colombia.
5) PhD thesis on objectives 1 and 2.
6) Doctoral thesis on the impact of the post-conflict on the water resources of the Colombian páramo ecosystem. The necessary resources for the achievement of this doctorate will be obtained from the Department of Geography of the University of Stockholm, Sweden.
2.Expected training products

The training of students in the area of scientific research will be a fundamental component of this proposal. The project will have the participation of two doctoral students, who will be trained in the initial period so that they can independently contribute to the processing of data related to satellite images, hydrogeological data and geospatial statistical analysis. Likewise, they will be trained so that they can be directed towards the process of publication in international magazines. Therefore, a research assistant will be trained for the research and publication processes.

3.Strategy for the dissemination of results and appropriation of the knowledge generated
The main strategy will be based on the production of publications in indexed international journals. At the same time, to publicize the results of the project, presentations will be made at international conferences, in the areas of conservation and hydrology, and the results will be socialized through talks at the two universities involved (Rosario and Stockholm University).
Additionally, journalists from some main Colombian newspapers (eg El Tiempo / El Espectador) will be contacted to report the results in a national context and to a non-expert audience.
