Biopsychosocial conditions of older adults and their caregivers: a mixed study in Bogotá and Pasto, 2025

Project: Research Project

Project Details

Description

Population aging in Colombia presents a growing challenge to the health and social protection system, especially in contexts of social and economic vulnerability. According to figures from DANE (2018) and the SABE Survey (2015), the population over 60 years of age exhibits high rates of multimorbidity, functional dependence, and unmet needs in terms of access to and quality of care. This reality demands comprehensive interventions that integrate functional assessment, access to health services, and social protection, while also considering the well-being and burden of caregivers.

The general objective of this project is to characterize the health conditions, functionality, social protection, and burden of caregivers of older adults, using a quantitative and qualitative approach, as input for the subsequent design of a pilot model of comprehensive and continuous care that can be adopted by healthcare providers in complementary networks.

The quantitative component will include the application of scales to measure functionality in older adults and caregiver burden, as well as a sociodemographic questionnaire. The qualitative component will consist of semi-structured interviews to explore perceptions, barriers, and priority needs. The target population will be older adults and caregivers affiliated with the Funtravidi Foundation (Bogotá), the Amparo San José Foundation (Pasto), and the general public at Universidad del Rosario.

The results will allow for the identification of key patterns and categories to guide the design of the care model and the generation of resources for training and health promotion through a Virtual Learning Object (VLO). The study aims to contribute to the formulation of innovative and context-specific strategies that improve the quality of life of older adults and strengthen support for their caregivers.
