Description
The SABE (National Study on Health, Welfare and Ageing) 2015 is a population-based survey of over-60s with representation from all regions and departments of the country, with over 23,000 people surveyed among older adults and caregivers.
This survey takes relevant data to consider in health. For the CEMA study center, such as anthropometrics; blood pressure; biochemists, behaviours and life habits, distributed by age; gender; ethnicity; socioeconomic stratum. In Colombia, according to the (SABE- 2015), 84.8% of older adults suffer from more than one chronic health condition, with high blood pressure and depression being the most frequent.
On the other hand, it is necessary to consider that, according to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2006), there are currently 600 million people aged 60 or over and it is estimated that by 2025 this number will increase to 1.2 billion people. Older adults are a heterogeneous group with well-defined psychosocial, cultural and biological characteristics, leading to a progressive decrease in functional capacity and the progressive onset of chronic non-communicable diseases (CNTD).
However, epidemiological studies worldwide show an upward trend in the incidence and prevalence of NCDs, such as diabetes, coronary heart disease, obesity, among others, positioning themselves as an important indicator of morbidity and mortality in the elderly population, since age itself becomes a risk factor for these diseases (WHO, 2010).
Consequently, the concept of active aging has been developed and implemented in recent years as a strategy to optimize the quality of life, health opportunities and community participation in the elderly population, as a result of the epidemiological evidence on the benefits that physical activity brings to this population (Warburton, et al 2006).Participation in both aerobic and strengthening physical activities generates positive responses that provide healthier aging, reducing all causes of mortality by 20 to 30 percent (Lee, 2001).
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to conduct secondary analyses to this national survey of different health indicators related to fitness components such as weight, height, percentage of fat, waist circumference, resistance strength, aerobic resistance and cardio metabolic risk variables, nutritional behavior and physical activity in this older adult population.
This is in order to construct epidemiological evidence of the current situation of older adults in Colombia. This national survey is totally relevant to national public policy for decision makers and for the implementation of strategies that encourage regular exercise is essential for the control and prevention of cognitive impairment in the elderly.
