Description

Ocular toxoplasmosis is the leading cause of infectious posterior uveitis worldwide and is characterized by a recurrent course that can lead to irreversible visual sequelae. Although antibiotic prophylaxis has been shown to significantly reduce the recurrence rate, information on the adverse effects associated with these regimens, especially in the long term and in real-world settings, is limited in Latin American populations, hindering informed clinical decision-making.

This study aims to determine the clinical and paraclinical adverse effects observed in Colombian patients diagnosed with ocular toxoplasmosis who received prophylactic antibiotic treatment. To this end, an observational, descriptive, and retrospective case series study will be conducted, including patients treated at a referral ophthalmology center in Bogotá between 2013 and 2025. Patients who received prophylaxis with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, pyrimethamine, clindamycin, and/or azithromycin will be included. The information will be obtained through a systematic review of medical records, collecting sociodemographic and clinical variables, therapeutic regimens used, treatment duration, clinical adverse effects—including gastrointestinal, dermatological, and hematological manifestations—and paraclinical alterations such as serum creatinine levels, liver enzymes, and changes in the complete blood count. A descriptive and comparative statistical analysis will be performed according to the type of variable.
The aim is to characterize the frequency, type, and severity of adverse effects associated with the different prophylactic regimens, as well as their relationship with treatment duration and the patients' clinical characteristics. The results of this study will provide relevant local evidence on the safety profile of antibiotic prophylaxis for ocular toxoplasmosis in Colombia, with direct implications for clinical decision-making, paraclinical monitoring, and appropriate risk communication to patients.
