Project: Research Project

Project Details

Description

This proposal is part of the "Transdisciplinary programme of comparative and transnational studies of medicine and public health in Latin America, from 1767 to the present day". This Program, which is being developed by the Social Studies Group of Sciences, Technologies and Professions of the University of Rosario, is a transnational comparative study of medicine and public health in several countries of Latin America, to be carried out over a period of 8 years. This Program has identified five phases of research corresponding to the five periods in which, successively, five major agendas of reform of medicine, public health and health services and systems have crossed the entire American continent from 1760 to today. This research sub-project corresponds to the comparative analysis of the cases of Colombia, Peru and Brazil for the first phase, between 1767 and 1830, which is the period in which these countries are subjected to a process of interaction with the Bourbon and Pombaline reforms illustrated, Spanish and Portuguese respectively, and aims to account for the differences and similarities of these processes of interaction between metropolitan reform agendas and their interactions with local processes themselves, mediated by both international and national socio-political actors. This project aims to study the arrival of so-called "enlightened medicine" in the colonial regions of the Viceroyalty of New Granada, the Viceroyalty of Lima and colonial Brazil, during the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century, as a moment of great importance both for the history of medicine and for the national history of each country. What are the similarities, differences and particularities of the development of European enlightened medicine in these regions in the 18th and early 19th centuries? What is the role played by socio-political actors and local political subjects in the very process of such development in the interaction with international agendas? How does this process and these particularities relate to the characteristics and scope of the transnational agenda of Bourbon and Pombaline reforms? How do local (national), social, cultural, economic and political developments interact with these reformist international agendas to produce medical and health realities particular to these local contexts? And how do these processes produce different medicines, public health and health services in each of these countries?
