23 years of uveitis epidemiology evolution in Bogota, Colombia

Project: Research Project

Project Details

Description

Broadly, the term uveitis refers to inflammation of the middle layer of the eye, made up of the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. It is estimated that it is associated with 2.8 to 25% of cases of significant visual acuity loss and legal blindness in the world. Its annual incidence varies from 17-52 per 100,000 cases and prevalence between 38-714 per 100,000 inhabitants. Within its epidemiological heterogeneity, the number of cases varies according to anatomical location (anterior, intermediate, posterior or panuveitis), age, country of study, sex, genetic, economic and environmental factors, among other study characteristics. Studies that describe the epidemiological distribution of uveitis and its different patterns make it possible to define guidelines that improve early diagnosis, timely management, and a better prognosis of the disease.

The objective of the project is to describe the distribution of patterns and clinical and paraclinical findings of patients diagnosed with uveitis during 23 years in different ophthalmological reference centers in Bogotá, Colombia.
