Description:
This training initiative seeks to explore the possibilities currently offered by sociology—as a means of interpreting the world—beyond its institutionalization as a profession and an academic discipline, with a view to discussing collective issues with broad audiences in a context marked by misinformation and political polarization. In this vein, we ask how sociology in general—and public sociology in particular—can serve as a tool for political education and for promoting dialogue and social change in Latin America.
Objectives:
The main goal of this space is to address the following questions: 1. What are the most used mechanisms and channels for conveying sociological concepts in the public sphere in Latin America over the past five years? 2. What are the most relevant concepts and categories around which Public Sociology originated and developed in Latin America? 3. What are the most common difficulties in establishing a dialogue between academia, the state, the media, and civil society in the region regarding issues considered public? What strategies and resources have been implemented to overcome these difficulties?
