Objective: To offer a space in which undergraduate students can participate in the research activities of the Observatory of Networks and Collective Action (ORAC), thus having the possibility of starting their training process as researchers in topics related to social mobilization, participatory democracy and the analysis of the constitution of public problems. Through the seedbed, the students will be able to collaborate in the elaboration of reports that will be made by the ORAC and that will have a public diffusion, beyond our university.
Description: The seedbed is dedicated to the systematic monitoring and periodic analysis of the forms of social mobilization and the exercise of participatory democracy that are taking place in Colombia and that are gaining a certain level of media visibility. By following these political phenomena, we also seek to understand how different social actors contribute to the constitution of various public problems in the country. The seedbed is therefore a space where students learn to use qualitative and quantitative research techniques that can be applied to the observatory's objects of study. It is also a space in which students can participate and contribute both in the collection of information used by the ORAC, and in the preparation of its databases and reports.
Seminar profile:
The Collective Action, Participatory Democracy and Public Problems seedbed is a space open to all students of the Universidad del Rosario - although especially conceived for those students linked to the Political Science and Government, International Relations and Sociology programmes - where a first research experience can be had on issues related to collective action processes through which causes of different kinds are claimed and to the processes of exercising participatory democracy. The seedbed is also interested in analysing the impact that such processes have on local, national and/or international politics, especially in relation to the constitution of public problems that gradually emerge in media and political agendas.
Working methodology:
The seedbed is linked to the Observatory of Networks and Collective Action (ORAC) and its members participate and collaborate in the research activities of this observatory. The research group is therefore a space where students learn to use qualitative and quantitative research techniques that can be applied to the observatory's objects of study. It is also a space where students can participate and contribute both in the collection of information used by the ORAC and in the preparation of its databases, reports and bulletins.
Active lines or projects:
- Bulletins on social protest in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
- Bulletins on the exercise of other forms of participatory democracy in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Disciplines of the seedbed:
Political Science, International Relations and Sociology.
