Description

TITLE: Characterization of feeding, swallowing, and voice processes in children aged 1 to 5 years.
AREA OF WORK: The purpose of this project is to characterize children aged 1 to 5 years and to understand the role of speech therapists in the areas of swallowing and voice in an educational context.
PROJECT PHASE: Project completed.
DESCRIPTION: During early childhood and with the introduction of solid foods, sensory difficulties may arise, characterized by low interest in and acceptance of food, which in turn affects the child's development, as reflected in alterations in the coordination of orofacial structures. Thus, the work of the speech-language pathologist in the processes of feeding and swallowing in the educational context influences learning processes, which involve functions such as attention, concentration, memory, and motivation that contribute to children's academic performance.
With regard to voice, educational institutions must recognize the impact of vocal behaviors (shouting, clearing the throat, whispering, imitating voices), as these can trigger dysphonia, which in turn influences children's social interactions and early experiences of communicative exchange.
